How to read a BIFMA X5.1 test report (without becoming a lab tech)

A 7-minute walk-through of every section of a BIFMA X5.1 task-chair test report — what passes, what fails, and the three numbers that actually matter.

Why the report exists at all

BIFMA X5.1 is the North American test standard for office task chairs. It exists so that a procurement officer can compare a USD 280 chair against a USD 1,800 chair without sitting on either, by reading test results from a single accredited lab. The standard runs the chair through ~20 test rigs covering swivel cycles, tilt cycles, drop tests and stability under offset load.

The report you'll receive from a real supplier is between 35 and 80 pages, with a one-page summary at the front and the lab's signed pass/fail per test at the back. If a supplier sends you a one-page certificate without the underlying lab report, treat it as a marketing collateral, not as a test result.

The three numbers that actually matter

1) Cyclic Test Cycles. The seat-and-back fatigue test runs 100,000 cycles. A real chair passes this with no structural failure and ≤1% deflection drift. Anything below 80,000 cycles before failure is a marketing chair, not a contract chair.

2) Backrest Strength Test. A 667 N (150 lb) horizontal force is applied to the back. The chair must not crack, deform or release the back. This is the test that catches the chairs whose backs detach 14 months into use.

3) Stability — Rear Load. A 90 kg test mass is shifted 102 mm aft of the seat centre. The chair must not tip. This catches base designs that look elegant in showroom photos and tip in the boardroom.

Reading OBJEKT reports

Every OBJEKT chair ships with the original PDF report from an ISO 17025-accredited lab, with the signed pass/fail page. We don't summarise; we send the source. If you want the EN 1335 equivalent for a European bid, we send both reports under one project file — the same chair passes both.

Every product on this site ships with the full ISO 17025-accredited test report — not a one-page certificate.
